Makeup Exams

Policy on Makeups in the Faculty of Social Science

Students who miss a regularly scheduled test/mid-term/exam can request that academic consideration be granted through the Student Absence Portal.  Please check your course outline to determine how a missed test/mid-term/exam will be treated if academic consideration is granted and follow these steps outlined by your instructor.  If there are no instructions included for how to proceed included on your course outline, you are expected to follow up with your instructor directly to determine alternative arrangements well in advance of the makeup date.

We follow a general principle that expects course work to conclude within a 12-month period at the most.  As such, a limit to the number of attempts made to complete a test/mid-term/exam is in place.

Students will be expected to write a test/mid-term/exam as originally scheduled, and if missed, will be expected to write the makeup as scheduled.

We realize that sometimes circumstances may prevent students from writing the makeup as scheduled.  In this case, you will have two additional opportunities to write the makeup, depending upon when they are scheduled by your instructor.

If all opportunities to write a makeup are missed, and these absences are documented and consideration is granted, a withdrawal without penalty will be applied to the course in which the original and makeups are missed.  There is no academic penalty incurred for a withdrawn and no tuition refund will be granted.

If a makeup is missed without supporting documentation, a zero will be recorded and the final mark in the course calculated accordingly.  This is likely to result in a failed grade for the course in which the makeup was not written.  No refunds will be granted.

Example:

Attempt # 1 – original exam is scheduled for December 15th and missed due to illness and academic consideration is granted.

Attempt # 2 – makeup exam is scheduled for January 15th and missed due to illness and academic consideration is granted.

Attempt # 3 – makeup exam is scheduled for April 15th and missed due to illness and academic consideration is granted.

Attempt # 4 – student is expected to write the makeup on May 15th as the next and final opportunity to write.

If attempt #4 is written, the student will receive a final grade with the results of the makeup included in their final grade calculation.

If the student misses attempt #4, and has documentation to support their absence, the course will be withdrawn without academic penalty incurred and the student will need to repeat or replace this course towards degree completion.

If the student misses attempt #4, and their absence cannot be documented, a grade of zero will be recorded for this missed makeup and a final grade calculated accordingly, which may result in a failed final mark.  Again, the student would need to repeat or replace this course towards degree completion and no tuition refund will be granted.

Students are responsible for making all arrangements for makeups with the instructor and with Accommodated Exams if supported by Accessible Education.  Failure to do so will not be considered grounds for appeal or further academic consideration.

It is an instructor’s prerogative to implement their own course or departmental policies regarding missed mid-term and/or finals for their classes and they may exercise discretion over any recommendations made for academic consideration.  As such, students are offered no guarantee that academic consideration will be supported in the same way by each professor.

Multiple makeup situations may require that makeups are written in another term with a different professor and a makeup not previously administered by the original professor.  When the makeup mid-term or final is not completed within the same term, students should be aware that changes in the course mid-terms or finals can include, but are not limited to, course learning objectives, textbooks or reading lists, and format.
